Billy Kennedy Biography

Billy Kennedy was named the head coach at Texas A&M after a stint with Murray State as the head coach, also coming from an assistant coaching position at Texas A&M. Bill Byrne, the Athletic Director for A&M says that Billy will bring a great hard-nosed defense and high powered offense to the basketball team. They will play harder than before and truly head back to the level they were at before the departure of Billy Gillespie. Gillespie was well known by the SEC fans for his failure in Kentucky. Billy Kennedy hopes not to repeat that in A&M.

Kennedy was the two time Ohio Valley coach of the year and led his team to great 54-14 record. They won Ohio Valley Conference Championships. He is a great coach that just wins. He got to back to back OVC championships and connective trips to the postseason.

Kennedy seems to be very excited about going back to Texas. He loves the atmosphere and just wants to help build that program back up from the rubble. He is doing all he can to maintain the excitement and will do everything in his power to insure this is a great team.

Kennedy is a proven winner. Over seven years, his teams average 21 wins. He just wins and that's what really counts... He had 2 NCAA appearances and one NIT. Murray was a school that didn't have much going for it as far as basketball, but Kennedy got them to the tournament. They played hard to get there and the loss is of no consequence. Kennedy at one point even won 2 straight OVC Coach of the Year awards.

In Kennedy's last season at Murray State he blew the lid off the joint bringing the team to brand new heights of a record at 31-5 and the OVC regular-season and tournament titles. They had gone to the NCAA tournament once again. They upset Vanderbilt and wow was that a surprise. This Vanderbilt team thought they had a shot at the Sweet Sixteen. They really just surprised a lot of people and you must give a lot of that credit to Kennedy and his tenacity. They hadn't won a game in the Tournament since 1988 and would have moved on had they not run into the buzz saw known as Butler. It was a for sure a season to remember and the best in recent memory.

In the first seasons at Murray they went 70-24 under Kennedy in OVC play and they had two league Championships and three runner-ups finishes. Kennedy has been in a few places and was under Haith from Missouri a fellow SEC jumper when he was at Miami.

Kennedy coached six seasons at Southeastern Louisiana for six seasons where he went to college with a 44-18 record and two Southland Conference regular-season titles. He got the school's first trip to the NCAA tournament. He builds programs and will build this program back to prominence and be a great contender in the SEC.
