Anthony Grant Biography
There may be no hotter name in the Southeastern Conference's coaching ranks than that of the brand new Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Anthony Grant. And while some of the recent years past have left much to be desired for Alabama men's basketball, Grant brings with him into the program a renewed sense of optimism and spirit that is based on the success that Grant had while at VCU and a hope that the same successes can follow him into the future.
Following the 2005-2006 season, Grant was rewarded for his hard work at the University of Florida with his first head coaching opportunity, at Virginia Commonwealth University. The faith that VCU bestowed upon Grant was immediately rewarded with a tremendous level of success out of the gate. In 2006-2007, his first year at VCU, Grant achieved a record of 28-7 overall, and 16-2 in conference play. That team advanced to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament and was widely considered to be one of the biggest surprises in the country.
Grant followed up that performance with a similarly strong season in 2007-2008 in which the team went 24-8 overall and 15-2 in CAA play. However, due to competitiveness on the bubble, that showing was only good enough for NIT play. And in his final season at VCU, Grant led the team to a 24-10 record overall and another NCAA Tournament appearance.
Following the 2008-2009 season at VCU, Grant was hired to take over as head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide. The hiring marked a return to the Southeastern Conference for Grant, where he had so much success as an assistant with the University of Florida. While it is too soon to say what the ultimate results will be for Grant at the University of Alabama, early returns have proven promising. He is 11-5 overall to date in his first season, and 1-1 in the SEC. And most importantly, he has reinvigorated the Alabama Crimson Tide fan base, who now have more to look forward to than they have in years.
