Skip Bertman Biography
LSU coaching legend Skip Bertman was born on May 23rd 1938 in Detroit, MI. Bertman attended the University of Miami from 1958-1960 and played catcher while earning reputation as a very smart college player. After time away from baseball, Bertman returned to Miami in 1976 to serve as an assistant on the baseball coaching staff. After seven years in that role, Bertman was hired by LSU in 1984 to serve as the school’s baseball head coach.
Bertman enjoyed great success at LSU very early on in his tenure. The team improved from 32 wins in 1984 to 41 wins in 1985 and then surprised the college baseball world with a 55 win campaign in 1986 that led to an SEC Championship and a College World Series appearance. Following that, Bertman earned an absolutely unprecedented run of success between 1987 and 2001: he led LSU to five College World Series Championships (1991,93,96,97,2000), five additional College World Series appearances (1987,89,90,94,98), six SEC Championships (1990-93,96-97), and eight fifty-plus win seasons. This incredible success marked him as a school legend, earned him a record six National Coach of the Year Awards (1986,91,93,96,97,2000), an 870-330-3 combined record, and the highest winning percentage in NCAA tournament history (.724).
After seventeen years coaching LSU, Bertman accepted the Athletic Director job in 2002. Bertman’s administrative work has kept LSU at the top of college baseball and he has retained his status as one of the most respected sports figures in the SEC. Ultimately, Bertman is clearly the best coach in SEC baseball history because his NCAA winning percentage and five College World Series titles easily eclipse the achievements of any other top coach.
