Melanie Balcomb Biography

Melanie Balcomb was born in Highstown, NJ. She began her basketball career on the court as a star point guard on the Highstown High School varsity team from 1976-1980. After that, she attended Trenton State College and set school records in assists and steals over four years at the institution.

Following college, Balcomb began her collegiate coaching career in 1993. After sitting on the benches of several prominent squads as an assistant, Balcomb developed a reputation as a renowned offensive strategist. As a result, she landed her first head coach job at Vanderbilt in 2002.

Balcomb has accomplished an extraordinary amount in her eight years on the Vanderbilt sideline. Since 2002, the Commodores have had eight NCAA Tournament appearances, eight 20-win seasons, eight top 25 finishes, three SEC Tournament Championships and four sweet 16 appearances.  Her success can be attributed to her offensive coaching style, basketball acumen, and her implementation of her own brand of winning.

In 2009, Balcomb won her third (and sixth for Vanderbilt) SEC tournament title and again advanced to the Sweet 16. Though the team regressed somewhat in 2010 with a 23-11 record and a fourth place finish in the SEC, Vanderbilt is poised to field a veteran team in 2011 and both the Commodores’ and Balcomb’s futures look very bright.
