2007 Florida Football

Florida Football Helmet

You can read about this year's Florida football team at 2010 Florida Gators Football or review Florida Gators vs Oklahoma Sooners.

Congrats to the Gators -- for being named by Rivals.com as having the #3 recruting class in the nation -- for the current, 2007-2008 recruiting year. Only Notre Dame and Alabama (at #1) were ranked higher.

Tough loss for Florida football to Michigan in the Capital One Bowl. It was surprising too, but Michigan actually has a lot of talent and played hard in Lloyd Carr's final game. The Wolverines obviously wanted the game more than the Gator's did.

But, Florida football has a bright future. They will be stronger in 2008. Most of their key players (including QB Tim Tebow, WR Percy Harvin) all return. and USC transfer RB Emmanuel Moody will be eligible. The Gators will battle it out with Georgia for the SEC East in 2008. More to come.

Prior Discussion:

Congrats to 2007 Heisman Trophy winner -- Tim Tebow. Tebow is the 3rd Florida Gator QB to win college football's preeminent award. The other two?

1. Steve Spurrier -- 1966
2. Danny Wuerffel -- 1996

The Florida Gators 2006 football season was just about perfect. They lost one game on the road at Auburn - otherwise - perfection (ended up 13-1). You can read all about their tremendous BCS Championship victory over Ohio State at Florida Gators.

The Florida Football Championship, combined with another NCAA basketball championship makes the Florida Gators the Best SEC Sports College.

Of course, the problem with winning college championships is that invariably you lose a lot of key players the next season. The 2007 University of Florida Football Gators are no exception. Of course, they lost star QB Chris Leak (free agent with the Bears) and running back Fred Taylor (drafted 1st round - Jacksonville, Jaguars).

However, they have a more than adequate quarterback replacement in Tim Tebow. If Tebow stays healthy (questionable as much as he runs…); but if he stays healthy, their offense will be fine. Offensive Lineman Drew Miller was selected to the pre-season First Team All-SEC team. And, don't forget about Wide Receiver Percy Harvin - he will be the Gator's offensive star in 2007.

The problem will be on defense, Defensive Lineman (pre-season, First Team, All-SEC selection) Derrick Harvey returns, but 9 other starters do not. Under head coach Urban Meyer, the Gators had an amazing recruiting year in the off-season. But you can't expect brand new freshman to contribute much in their first year. Of course, Florida has plenty of other talent as well - but, however you slice it, the Gator defense will be in a rebuilding year.

Also, everyone will naturally be gunning for the Gators. It will be the biggest game on every schedule. Given how tough the SEC East is (see SEC Football), we think the Gators will lose at least two games in the SEC. We think they'll probably end up in a tie for second place in the SEC East. They'll go to (and win) a nice New Year's Day (non-BCS) bowl game.

And, look out for Florida football in 2008 when some of that great recruiting class steps up.
