Antonio Langham Biography

One of the best defensive players in Crimson Tide history is unfortunately remembered by the NCAA sanctions he brought to Tuscaloosa when he submitted an application before the 1993 season to enter the NFL Draft. The move technically left him ineligible before the season began, although he played, and played magnificently as he won both the Jim Thorpe and Jack Tatum awards.

He was a three-year starter at left cornerback for Alabama and set school records with 19 interceptions, including three that he returned for touchdowns, and added two touchdowns on blocked punt returns.

In his junior year, he was a first-team All-American by College and Pro Football Newsweekly and third-team choice by Associated Press as a junior, the followed that up with another first-team All-American and All-SEC honor during his senior year.

In the inaugural SEC Championship game in 1992, Langham broke open a tight game with a 27-yard interception for a touchdown that was the margin of victory in a 28-21 victory over Florida, which would be the Tide's last SEC Championship until 1999.

Langham also played for the National Championship Alabama team as his play in the defensive backfield bottled up the explosive Miami attack in a 36-13 drubbing over the Hurricanes.

The fallout from the investigation left scars on the football program that was felt for years afterward. The Tide had to forfeit eight wins and a tie (the tie was a last second comeback touchdown and two pint conversion over Tennessee) ever game in the 1993 season. Due to NCAA Sanctions, which included severe scholarship reductions, Alabama would not be back in the thick of the SEC championship chase until the 1999 season.
