Week Five SEC Baseball Power Poll Rankings

My view from the outfield bleachers…..

At last, SEC play has finally begun for the baseball season. The biggest match-up of last weekends opening series was between the #1 ranked Florda Gators and the #7 ranked LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge. After Fridays 5-4 squeaker won by the Gators. Florida went on to shutout the Tigers 1-0 on Saturday and won 7-3 in the finale on sunday for the season sweep and proving they are the team to beat this season in the SEC.

The Gators pitching was strong and the offense is showing just enough to carry the Gators through the rest of the season. The Gators are only 7th in runs scored in the SEC, but their pitching is frist in the league in runs allowed and with pitching that good, the Gators will be a formidable opponent for everyone the rest of the year.

The Auburn Tigers were able to win their series against the Arkansas Razorbacks two games to one over the weekend. Each game was a high scoring affair as the Tigers were able to win the second and third games at home 9-5 and 8-7 after dropping the opening game 5-6 to the Hogs. Both of these teams look like the toughest threat to LSU in the SEC West and Auburn got the early jump on that race with the early victories over the Hogs.

Auburn’s pitching is a concern though, has they have given up the second highest runs in the league thus far. Alabama is also making a case in that race as well with a two games to one series victory over Ole Miss last weekend. In the SEC East race, the teams most likely to push the Gators for supremacy are the Vanderbilt Commodores and South Carolina Gamecocks and both teams won their opening SEC series at home.

The Commodores beat Miss. State two games to one and the Gamecocks beat the Georgia Bulldogs two games to one, as well. Kentucky toppled ole Rocky Top over the weekend two games to one and will try to stay in the conversation in the SEC East race and make it to Hoover for the SEC tournament this season after missing out last year. And here are your week 5 Power Poll Rankings…..
