2010 Florida Gators Softball

Looking for current Florida Gators Softball info? Check out our 2011 Florida Gators Softball page.

Congrats to the Florida Gators Softball team. The Lady Gators won the 2008 SEC Softball Championship and set an all-time NCAA softball record with 70 wins!! Wow. And they were ranked #1 in the country for a while before losing in the semi-finals of the 2008 Women's College World Series.

2009 was nearly a repeat. The Lady Gators won the SEC Championship again; and made it all the way to the NCAA/College World Series final -- before losing to Washington. Still, coming in second in the nation isn't bad. Maybe they'll win it all in 2010?

The Florida Gators softball team ended their fall 2009 season with a strong win over Chipola. In this final game freshman Brittany Schutte led the team by going 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs. Pitching 4 innings, classmate Erin Schuppert struck out six and allowed only four hits. Chipola in the top of the second moved up reducing the lead to two. Amanda Vickers was hit by a pitch as she reached first and then advanced to second on Ashley Ellis's fielder's choice. The bases were loaded after Kellie Todd drew a walk and Shanae Dickens fired a single down the left field line, driving Vickers and Ellis to home plate. With a routine 5-3 groundout the Gators flaunted their defensive skills in the top of the seventh. Selentia Pittman was stopped in her tracks by first baseman Bush when she tried to over take third. The Gators finished out the game with the help of Holle's home run off the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning and locking in the Gator's 12-4 victory.

The Gator's 2009 overall record stands at 63-5, they have a National Finish of 2nd, and SEC Record (Finish) of 26-1 (1st)

What's new this year?

Head softball coach Tim Walton of Gators announced the signing of 3 new players for next season.

Kasey Fagan of Dunnellon, Fla., Cheyenne Coyle of West Hills, Calif., and Hannah Rogers of Winter Haven, Fla. will be on deck for the 2010-11 season.

Kasey Fagan is a righty, considered to be a true utility player. Because of her versatility she has covered variety of positions in playing for 2009's Class 4A State Champion Dunnellon High School. With a 32-1 record the Tigers finished the season by ranking fourth in ESPN Rise Fab 50 Poll. Fagan brings to the table numerous accomplishments, one of them being the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year.

Cheyenne Coyle, in her senior year at Chatsworth High School was the Chancellor's shortstop. The Chancellors 2009 season finished at 24-7. In 2009 with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs she led the league. 2009 was a great year for Cheyenne she was named Chatsworth's MVP. In a late season outstanding first appearance on the mound, the righty, pitched seven innings, chalking up a 4-3 in a key league game.

The third addition to the 2010-11 class is Hannah Rogers, a pitcher for Lake Wales High School. She ushered the Highlanders to the 2007 Class 4A state title, the 2008 4A Regional title, and a state championship finals appearance in 2009. Last season she was three-time all-state and all-county first-team selection and a finalist for Florida's Gatorade Pitcher of the Year.

Gators rank high with the NFCA

The Gator's cumulative GPA of 3.49 was ranked fifth in the nation by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). This is the first time the Gators hit the top 10 and its highest ranking in program history.

Head coach Tim Walton said, "This is a great achievement, we are a well-balanced team, successful on and off the field. We take a lot of pride in our academics and I commend our players for their hard work. We are very fortunate to have such a great support system in the Office of Student Life and our players will walk away with a great education from the University of Florida and will be well prepared for life."

With their record and top notch players you can bet the Gators will pull out another stellar performance next season.

All of this follows a sweet record in 2007 of 50-22 and second in the SEC East. It finished the year ranked 14th nationally.

But in UF's softball team was even stronger and finished the season ranked No. 3 in both final polls after a record-breaking season that included the team's first trip to the Women's College World Series. Florida ended the season with a 70-5 record on the season and were the first team in NCAA history to record 70 wins in a single season. As a team, the Gators made records almost in every sector namely it set school single season records for wins, batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, at bats, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, total bases, walks, sacrifice flies, ERA, opponent batting average, saves, shutouts, innings pitched, fewest hits allowed, fewest runs allowed, fewest earned runs allowed, strikeouts and chances. The Gators can boast of a young but talented roster.

Florida has the following five players, Francesca Enea, Ali Gardiner, Stacey Nelson, Aja Paculba and Kim Waleszonia each of whom earned All-America honors from both NFCA/Louisville Slugger and Easton. The Gators also has the following eight players Kristen Adkins, Ami Austin, Stephanie Brombacher, Megan Bush, Tiffany DeFelice , Shaunice Harris, Aja Paculba and Kristine Priebe who earned names among the 66 Florida student-athletes to make the 549-player list named to the SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll. For the second time in a row, Florida Coaching Staff has been named the Southeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Last Season's Discussion:

The Florida Gators softball team was ranked 14th nationally at the end of the 2007 season. Pretty good. They also ended the year with a 50-22 record and second in the SEC East. So, they are clearly a strong college softball power.

UF's head softball coach is Tim Walton. The assistant coach is Jennifer Rocha.

During the 2008 season expect to see these names on the roster:

  • Kristen Adkins/freshman
  • Stephanie Brombacher/freshman
  • Corrie Brooks/sophomore
  • Megan Bush/freshman
  • Tiffany Defelice/freshman
  • Francesca Enea/sophomore
  • Le Net Franklin/junior
  • Alexandra Gardiner/junior
  • Brittany Handy/junior
  • Shaunice Harris/freshman
  • Kristina Hilberth/junior
  • Danyell hines/freshman
  • Brooke Johnson/junior
  • Stacey Nelson/junior
  • Aja Paculba/freshman
  • Kristine Priebe/freshman
  • Mary Ratliff/senior
  • Kim Waleszonia/junior

You can see that the Gators have a young team with only one senior and mostly freshmen.

The Sophomores on the team have had at least some experience among the Florida Gators softball team and the freshman will catch on fast. In fact, they already have.

Last year, Gator Sophomores Stacey Nelson and Kim Waleszonia earned Louisville Slugger All-America honors. Nelson was selected for the second team; Waleszonia made 3rd team.
