Can Tua Tagovailoa Prove He is a Franchise-changing Quarterback This Season?

The eyes of the scouting world are going to be on Tua Tagovailoa this coming season, more than we have ever seen before. The Alabama quarterback is just one year away from being eligible for the NFL draft, and after what can only be described as an outstanding college season last season, he now has to go to the next level and prove that he is an elite, NFL franchise changing quarterback.

There is no doubt that based on what we saw last season, Tagovailoa is a future NFL starter for someone, and he will make a career from playing football. However, the conversation has already begun as to how high he will go in the NFL draft of 2020, and much of that will depend on how far he pushes himself this season.

If he impresses in the early weeks of the college season and shows the quality we want to see from him, it wouldn't be surprising to see teams who are in desperate need of a quarterback to tank the season, in the hope of picking Tua up in the draft. But to do that, teams will need to be shown that this is a player who can turn around their franchise on his own when he joins them.

He already has one championship to his name, and a record-breaking season so as far as stats go, there is probably little else he can do this season. He threw for nearly 4000 yards last season and recorded 43 touchdowns, there is no doubt that this kid has the ability on the field but this season we need to see something else.

Scouts won't be looking at the touchdowns he throws, or the number of yards he gains but instead they will be looking for the star qualities that make an elite quarterback stand out from a bunch of very good quarterbacks. This will put huge scrutiny on his decision making, and his ability to take his team up the field when they are down in the final quarter and in need of points on the board. It is these situations that are the difference, and the reason why players like Aaron Rodgers are paid the contracts they get.

Tagovailoa will be expected to lead Alabama to another championship this season, although they are not the favorites with the bookmakers. The latest American football odds have Alabama at +220 to win another title, behind Clemson who are the favorites.

It isn't imperative for Tagovailoa to lead Alabama to a championship if he wants to show the star qualities that everyone wants to see from him, but if he does show them then, of course, the reigning champions are going to be very difficult to beat. Another success will see him leave his college career behind with a CV that is full of both team and personal accolades, something that will put him at the top of the NFL draft next season.
