The past couple years, Crimson Tide baseball teams have not played up to Alabama's traditionally high baseball standards. In 2007, the Tide finished the year with a 31-26 overall and 15-15 SEC record. Bama baseball ended the 2008 season with a 35-28 overall and 16-14 SEC record. The Tide did manage to make it to the NCAA Tournament, last year, for the 19th time. Alabama finished second in the SEC Western Division and tied for fourth place in the overall standings.
Last years discussion follows:
Alabama Crimson Tide baseball is a leading SEC title holder with 4 regular season titles and 7 Tournament Championship. In this the team is tied with LSU. In 2006 the team's coach, Jim Wells, became the team's all-time winning coach. In fact, we have named Wells 3rd on the list of Best All-Time SEC Baseball Coaches.
They also participated in the NCAA College word series a total of five times and came in second in both 1983 and 1997. This makes team a formidable opponent to their rivals in Tennessee, Georgia, and Mississippi State. In fact, we think Bama ranks second on the list of Best All-Time SEC Baseball Programs.
In 2006 the Tide earned a Championship SEC title and ended the season with a 20-10 record. The 2008 season is packed full of promise.
When home games are played at the Sewell-Thomas Stadium the sixth inning is accompanied by the song "Cotton-Eyed Joe" as the stadium has been nicknamed "The Joe" by the fans. This is in honor of Joe Sewell, a baseball Hall of Famer and former member of the Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team. Though the stadium didn't get named after the legendary player until 1978.
The Joe is a source of pride for the baseball team and the students of the university, as well as the numerous fans. The stadium was where the first of the games were held in 1948 where the team won in a 5-2 score against the Bradley Braves. While it might not have been much to look at in those years, the numerous improvements and loving dedication from the fans has fostered many improvements.
In 1991 The Joe found itself a new grandstand, in 1996 the stadium was the host of the NCAA Regional that beaches, with a 4,000 fan capacity, were added down the right field line. It was in 2001 that the most major of renovations took place in the stadium. It can now house 6,118 fans and includes such features as Chairback seats, five new concession stands, five new bathrooms (per gender) and three new ticket booths.
In addition the Grandstand was extended down the right field line and the improvements included a new club house for the players as well as indoor batting cages, pitching machines, training rooms and coaching offices. Alabama ranked 9th nationally last season nationally in average college baseball fan attendance.
